Talkin' Bout an Evolution


The Evolution is the first major design change to the Acme espresso series since our inception in 2011.

Now used by professional baristas and coffee advocates around the globe; Acme & Co was the brainchild of Jeff Kennedy – The Godfather of New Zealand espresso. Wanting to create the perfect cup for the perfect cup of coffee, Jeff’s design factored in weight ratios and correct handle sizes, without compromising durability to protect from the inevitable knocks and drops.

The Evolution series cups have the same footprint and hold the same volume as the original, but now come with a smoother inner-gradient to make for an easier pour for Latte Artists. While the base is still thick for improved heat retention, the lip is finer and tapers more to make it even nicer to drink from. The biggest change is to the handle, which has been redesigned to make it more comfortable to hold. All the innovations are thoroughly tested through customer feedback and daily use at our flagship café, Prefab in Wellington, where 1,200 cups of coffee are served each day.

"The Evolution series is a natural extension of Acme’s vision. We wanted to make traditional espresso cups more usable and we are doing that more strongly with these design changes. The concept was not to revolutionize an already brilliant design, rather to make minor but vital changes to make the cups more distinctly Acme."

Colour is still an important part of the cup and to tie into our strong heritage, we named the new colours after the unique wild life found in New Zealand;

  • Feijoa (green) after a fruit
  • Kōkako (blue) after a bird
  • Rata (red) for the flower
  • Weka (brown), a flightless bird
  • Rounding off with Dolphin (grey), Penguin (black), Milk (white) and Whale (grey/blue) to come later in the year.

The Evolution has landed in South Korea, UAE and New Zealand. Europe and UK markets will have the Evolution early July. USA and the rest of the globe by late August.
